On this day, January 25, 1992 icon Emmylou Harris was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. “Music is like food, sustenance. You certainly don’t do it for the spotlight. You do it for the amazing exhilaration of singing, the feeling of the music going through you” she stated at her induction twenty-five years ago.
Born to a military family in Birmingham, Alabama Emmylou Harris grew up in North Carolina and Virginia. She left college at the University of North Carolina for New York City where she set out to pursue a music career.
Throughout her over forty year career span singer-songwriter Emmylou has released 26 studio albums plus numerous other live and compilation albums. Her debut album Pieces of the Sky was certified Gold. She would go on to produce 9 more albums that would reach Gold status.
Throughout her career she has been awarded many accolades including 12 Grammy Awards, 5 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, 4 Americana Music Association Awards, 3 Country Music Association and 2 Academy of Country Music Awards; including the honorable ‘Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award’ in 2011. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008 and received highest honors from Billboard in 1999 when she was their ‘Century Award’ recipient. Some of her #1 hits include “Together Again”, “Sweet Dreams”, “Two More Bottles of Wine”, “Beneath Still Waters”, “(Lost His Love) On Our Last Date” and “To Know Him is to Love Him”, a collaboration with fellow legends Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt.
