Kenny Chesney’s “There Goes My Life” Is the Perfect Father’s Day Song

It’s Father’s Day, and while country music stars and fans are honoring their dads today, the dads out there are also sharing their love for the children who gave them the name “Dad.” Yes, there are many songs out there that can adequately address unconditional and special love, but few so squarely explain the cycle of love that a first-time dad experiences like Kenny Chesney‘s “There Goes My Life.”

This No. 1 single was released by Chesney in October 2003 and was the lead release off his 2004 best-selling album, When the Sun Goes Down. The beautiful and touching ballad was written by powerhouse songwriters Wendell Mobley and Neil Thrasher and tackles the subject of an unexpected pregnancy that turns into life’s greatest blessing.

The song follows an unprepared young man who finds out that he is going to be father. As the news sinks in that a baby is imminent, he sees his life flash before his eyes and believes his best days are over. His daughter begins to grow — in stature and in his heart — and as the years go on, he goes from watching his life disappear because of the surprise addition to kissing his life away as it drives away to college.

We wish a very Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

“There Goes My Life” lyrics:

All he could think about was I’m to young for this
Got my whole life ahead
Hell I’m just a kid myself
How’m I gonna raise one
All he could see were his dreams going up in smoke
So much for ditching this town and hanging out on the coast
Oh well, those plans are long gone
And he said
There goes my life
There goes my future, my everything
Might as well kiss it all good-bye
There goes my life
A couple years of up all night and a few thousand diapers later
That mistake he thought he made covers up the refrigerator
Oh yeah, he loves that little girl.
Momma’s waiting to tuck her in
As she stumbles up those stairs
She smiles back at him dragging that teddy bear
Sleep tight, blue eyes and bouncing curls
He smiles
There goes my life
There goes my future my everything
I love you, daddy goodnight
There goes my life
She had that Honda loaded down
With Abercrombie clothes and 15 pairs of shoes and his American express
He checked the oil and slammed the hood, said your good to go
She hugged the both and headed off to the west coast
He cried
There goes my life
There goes my future, my everything
I love you
Baby good-bye
There goes my life
There goes my life
Baby good-bye
