Last year, devastation struck the Caribbean when Hurricane Irma made landfall. Anybody who is a Kenny Chesney fan knows that his heart (and oftentimes his feet) is in the islands, so when he learned of the destruction of his beloved part-time residency, he did what he does best. He put pen to paper and created music to share how he was feeling.
The result of him pouring his feelings into his work is his newest collection, Songs for the Saints. Chesney discussed his inspiration for the album in a press release earlier today:
I knew I wanted this album to show the spirit of the people, but I wanted it to focus on healing, on their gift to rise above such complete chaos and devastation. They had no power, no real food, nothing; they dug in, started clearing the land and rebuilding. To me, that’s inspiring. To let them know, they’re not only not forgotten months later, but we’re holding them up as inspiration — and offering help in any way that we can, including music. Because music heals, it inspires, and this is for them.
Songs for the Saints features some special musical guests who, likewise, have connections to the island: Ziggy Marley, Mindy Smith, and Jimmy Buffett. The album was recorded in Nashville and mixed in Key West, combining both of Chesney’s worlds to create the project.
A portion of the proceeds from the album sales will support Hurricane Irma disaster relief for the United States and British Virgin Islands through the Love for Love City Fund. Pre-orders for the album began today, and the album will officially be released on Friday, July 27.
