On this date in 2006, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman said “I do” before family and friends. The two Australians turned American superstars were introduced in 2005, cupid’s arrow struck, and they never looked back. Okay, it wasn’t exactly that easy, but today marks their eleventh year of marriage, so things definitely panned out after a little bit of a slow start.
Kidman spilled the beans to Ellen DeGeneres many years ago that it took Urban months to work up the nerve to ask her out after the two met at G’Day LA, an event honoring Australians. Four months to be exact, and Kidman didn’t let Urban forget the feet dragging that took place. She insisted that he must not have liked her at first sight and that was why he dawdled the way he did. Of course, she is Nicole Kidman, so the chances of Urban not falling head over heels upon an initial glance is laughable, but at least she has something to hold over his head ’til death do them part.
Ultimately the two really did fall in love, say “I do,” and make memories at a wedding ceremony on June 25, 2006.
Since that fateful day when the two were bound together, they have welcomed two children, Sunday Rose and Margaret Faith, into the world. They have also helped each other heal from previous wounds — hers in the form of a failed marriage to Tom Cruise and his in the form of a public battle with addiction.
In 2007, Kidman explained the timing of their meeting in a Vanity Fair interview:
I think we were two lonely people. I would probably say that two very lonely people managed to meet at a time when they could open themselves to each other. We were a mixture of frightened and brave.
And overcome that loneliness and fear, they did.
Happy Anniversary to Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman! You make us all fall in love with the two of you over and over every day.
